I've been a bit quiet on the music front of late, at least, I've not managed to get much to the point I can release it. So, when people like The Crow Hill Company host little composition competitions it's a good opportunity to kick myself into getting a track finished.
And so it came to pass that October's competition was to compose a track using just the Attic Grand instrument from Crow Hill's Vaults freebies. Vaults instruments are only available for a few months at a time, so with the Attic Grand's impending retirement, we were asked to write a sad song to commemorate it.
My entry is kinda sad, a little plaintiff, ever so slightly optimistic (after all, those of us who already have the Grand will continue to be able to make lovely music with it)… Written with four copies of Attic Grand each playing a different part (or perhaps one instrument played by an octopus). I even got a bass sound out of it with some judicious EQ’ing. There’s a bit of Piano Rack FX in there, and finally I washed the whole thing in masses of splosh, because of course.
The video is a little visualisation I threw together in After Effects, another first for me as I had to figure out how to render smoke, heat haze and embers flying through the air. It was fun!
Sadly, I didn't win. The winning entry was very good too. I was pleased to note it's not particularly better than mine, but obviously the judges perferred it. That's competition life!
